The tool is hosted on GitHub in the RemoveWindowsAI repository and is maintained by a developer under the pseudonym zoicware. It allows users to disable Copilot, the screenshot search tool Recall, AI enhancements in applications like Paint and Notepad, as well as related data collection processes.

The script modifies registry keys, removes AppX packages, hidden installers, and downloads custom tools to block the reinstallation of solutions via Windows Update.

Such software for removing unnecessary components has been circulating in technical communities for several months, but it has sparked interest amid growing dissatisfaction with Microsoft’s artificial intelligence strategy.

The repository quickly garnered 938 stars (akin to likes) and 25 forks, demonstrating a high level of engagement, rapid dissemination, and reach. Achieving 1,000 stars is a milestone that most open-source projects rarely reach.

However, the number of downloads on GitHub is not displayed.

Microsoft positions Windows 11 as an AI-PC platform. The OS includes:

• Copilot — an AI assistant that helps write texts, search for information, generate images, and analyze documents;
• Recall — a controversial feature that takes screenshots to aid in searches;
• other AI solutions.

Users are concerned about resource consumption, potential data collection, and the complexity of completely opting out of standard settings. Some describe the AI solutions as mandatory.

In July, Microsoft introduced a new Copilot Mode feature in the Edge browser, allowing web pages to be viewed with the help of artificial intelligence.
