Shopify founder and chief executive Tobias Lütke will join the board of directors of the cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase.

“Toby will bring to Coinbase’s board a broad range of skills and experience. […] He also strongly believes in the power of cryptocurrencies and was among the first to implement them through the integration of Shopify with Coinbase Commerce,” said Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong.
Under Lütke, the company aims to “unlock the potential” of digital assets “to enhance economic freedom in the same way Shopify democratized online commerce.”
The board is expected to approve the appointment within a week.
In May 2020, the e-commerce giant and digital-currency operator Coinpayments forged a partnership aimed at expanding cryptocurrency use as a payment method.
Back in the summer of 2021, Shopify provided a limited group of merchants the ability to sell NFTs without third parties.
