Shutterstock to start selling AI-generated images

The stock-photo agency Shutterstock expanded its partnership with the AI lab OpenAI to sell stock images generated by the DALL-E 2 model.

Users will be able to generate an image directly within the service. The price of AI-generated works has not been disclosed.

Shutterstock will also launch the Contributor Fund. It is intended to compensate artists whose works were used to train the AI model.

Payouts will occur semi-annually. The amount of compensation will be announced closer to integrating the tool into Shutterstock.

The stock agency will also prohibit selling images created by other text-to-image generators.

“We understand that our great responsibility is to embrace this evolution and ensure that the generative technologies driving innovation are grounded in ethical practices,” said Shutterstock CEO Paul Hennessy.

OpenAI chief Sam Altman said that artificial intelligence is becoming an integral part of artists’ creative and working processes.

The launch of the integration of DALL-E 2 into the stock service is planned for «the coming months».

Shutterstock and OpenAI have been collaborating since 2021. The stock photo agency sold images and metadata from the AI lab to help in creating DALL-E.

Earlier Shutterstock began removing images created by artificial intelligence. At the time the company did not comment, though the user agreement did not ban posting such content.

As a reminder, Getty Images banned AI-generated content on its platform in September. The company cited risks related to copyright infringement.

In October OpenAI opened access to DALL-E 2 to everyone without a waiting list.
