Since the start of the year, experts have uncovered more than 1,500 fraudulent sites targeting cryptocurrency investors.

Since January 2021, Kaspersky Lab specialists recorded more than 1,500 fraudulent resources aimed at cryptocurrency investors and users interested in mining.

Among the most common schemes are the creation of fake bitcoin-exchange websites, messages about sales of mining equipment, and the spread of phishing pages to steal private keys for crypto wallets.

In the case of fake exchange sites, the attackers allegedly offer a coupon to top up an account on the platform. However, to use it, the user must make a ‘verification payment’, usually no more than 0.005 BTC, the experts note:

“A distinguishing feature of phishing and other forms of cryptocurrency fraud is the high level of detail in the preparation of sites. For example, on fake crypto exchanges, real data from active exchanges is often loaded.”

In April, Kaspersky Lab reported the distribution of clone of the Bitmain site to steal cryptocurrency from miners.
