Slovenia Proposes 25% Tax on Cryptocurrency Transactions

Slovenia Proposes 25% Tax on Cryptocurrency Transactions

Slovenia’s Ministry of Finance is considering the introduction of a 25% tax on profits from cryptocurrency transactions, as reported by official sources.

The bill is currently under public discussion, which will conclude on May 5.

According to the document, the tax will apply when digital assets are sold for fiat money or used to pay for goods and services. Cryptocurrency exchanges and transfers between personal wallets will not be taxed.

To calculate the tax, users must record all transactions for annual declarations and account for the difference between purchase and sale prices. The regime will be integrated into existing legislative mechanisms.

Slovenian Finance Minister Klemen Boštjančič told local media that tax regulation is necessary. He described the absence of a tax on private crypto transactions as unfair.

According to him, the introduction of the tax is not aimed at increasing budget revenues but rather at eliminating the “illogicality” of the current system.

Jernej Vrtovec from the New Slovenia party believes such measures could slow the development of the crypto industry in the country.

In his view, taxes will drive investors and young professionals out of the country. He emphasized that fiscal policy should encourage economic growth, not stifle it.

Back in September 2021, Slovenia’s Tax Authority began exploring the possibility of introducing an income tax on cryptocurrency transactions.
