The Investigative Committee of Russia opened a criminal case against the rector of Smolensk State University of Sport (SGUS), Georgy Grets, on charges of abuse of official powers (Part 1, Article 285 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation).
According to investigators, from September 2019 to December 16, 2021, the head of SGUS authorised the placement of a mining farm on the university’s premises, which was connected to a gas-fired boiler house in federal ownership.
The Investigative Committee assessed the damage at more than 4.2 million rubles. The investigation is ongoing.
On December 15, law enforcement authorities reported the detention of Grets and charging him and one of his associates with embezzling more than 1.5 million rubles.

Earlier this week, a court in Saratov fined the former traffic police officer 30,000 rubles for mining at work.
