South Korean resident sentenced to prison for metaverse harassment

A 30-year-old South Korean resident was sentenced to four years in prison for sexually harassing minors in an unnamed ‘popular’ metaverse. Local media report.

According to the report, the defendant registered on one of Korea’s VR platforms. From December 2021 to March 2022, he communicated with junior and senior high school students through his avatar.

The man gave minors gifts, in exchange for which he asked them to send nude photographs. His computer also contained sexually explicit messages.

The defendant pleaded guilty. The court noted that the sexual materials were not distributed and were not used for profit.

In addition to the prison term, the defendant will undergo an 80-hour compulsory treatment programme for sexual deviance and will be barred for seven years from holding positions in organisations that work with children.

In June, the Australian Federal Police, together with Monash University, began training artificial intelligence to recognise violence against children.
