The Stellar Development Foundation (SDF) has proposed postponing the network update vote scheduled for January 30 due to a bug identified in the Stellar Core v20.1.0 release.
Based on ecosystem feedback, we’ve decided to disarm our validators in support of postponing the Protocol 20 vote on Jan. 30 until after a bug fix – which is already in the works – is available.

“Based on ecosystem feedback, we decided to disarm our validators to support postponing the January 30 vote on Protocol 20 until a bug fix, which is already in the works, is available,” the statement said.
The SDF stated that the vulnerability poses a “minor risk” given the phased rollout. The new protocol version will activate the Soroban smart contract platform on the mainnet. Developers acknowledged that the vulnerability could affect applications and services using it for transactions.
“Network updates are not something SDF does alone. To decide whether to proceed given the bug, we opened topics on Stellar Dev Discord and in our developer mailing list, inviting the ecosystem to share their views. Feedback and discussions on this choice led us to change our approach,” SDF stated.
If validators still vote for the update to Protocol 20, it will occur as planned, the developers emphasized. If a quorum is not reached, the network will continue to operate on version 19. The organization will present a fixed release for the update “within two weeks.”
In 2022, SDF launched a $100 million fund to encourage developers of products and utilities based on Soroban.
