Steve Wozniak Loses Lawsuit Against YouTube
Steve Wozniak has lost his lawsuit against YouTube and its parent company Google, Bloomberg reports. The Apple co-founder had sought to have fraudulent videos about bitcoin giveaways featuring his name removed.
In July 2020, Wozniak joined a class-action lawsuit alleging that the scammers’ actions led to millions of dollars in losses for users of the video hosting site. The fraudsters also acted in the names of Bill Gates, Elon Musk and Michael Dell.
According to a preliminary ruling by Santa Clara County Superior Court Judge Sunil Kulkarni, YouTube is protected under the federal Communications Decency Act (CDA). He said the platform is not liable for material posted by third parties.
Wozniak argued that Section 230 of the CDA should not apply to the service, saying that it not only failed to take action against the scammers but also promoted the material.
The judge rejected the argument, stating that these factors were insufficient to overcome the legal immunity. The judge gave the entrepreneur 30 days to seek a reconsideration of the suit.
Earlier in March 2021, Ripple and its CEO Brad Garlinghouse reached a settlement with YouTube over a lawsuit filed against the video hosting site in 2020. The plaintiffs accused the service of failing to take action against scammers promoting fake XRP token giveaways in their name.
