Students Use AI to Do Their Homework

Reddit users shared stories about how they used language models like GPT-3 to write scientific papers. This is reported by Motherboard.

A first-year biochemistry student going by the handle innovate_rye said that artificial intelligence helps him with writing most of his homework.

“These are simple questions that require extended answers […]. I sent an AI query ‘What are five good and bad things in biotechnology’. He gave me an answer for which I received five points,” the student said.

According to innovate_rye, without AI completing ‘useless’ homework takes two hours. The technology reduced this time to 20 minutes.

“I like learning a lot, but sometimes homework makes me procrastinate and not submit assignments. The ability to do this faster and more efficiently seems to me a skill,” he said.

Another user with the handle AeUsako_ recounted a similar story. While studying in high school, he used OpenAI technology to create an essay about current world events. The student lost points for lack of external sources, but the AI-generated text passed plagiarism checks.

“Because I used OpenAI, I didn’t feel the constant worry of having to spend all my time on writing an essay,” AeUsako_ said.

According to Canadian researcher in innovative education George Veletsianos, this is because the generated text is original.

“[It] is not copied from anywhere else, but created by a machine, so plagiarism-detection software won’t be able to detect it,” the scientist says.

He added that in the near future the situation regarding assessing text originality and tracing its source is unlikely to change.

Veletsianos noted that language models can be used not only by students.

“This technology can generate a lecture on the fly, as well as questions on the topic of the class,” he said.

The scientist says such tools will be useful to increase learning efficiency and engagement in the educational process.

In September, OpenAI unveiled the speech recognition system Whisper.

In July, the GPT-3 language model wrote a paper about itself.
