Unlike Latin America and Asia, where the trend was modestly positive (+32% and +1% respectively), Europe and North America saw a triple-digit rise in the metric.

The UK figure jumped 479% — from 1.8 million to 6.8 million. In the United States, 214.7 million attacks were carried out (+340% year-on-year). Victims included businesses, cities, airlines and even schools.

“The digital attack is intensifying, and the threat landscape continues to widen.” — said SonicWall CEO Bob VanKirk.

To increase their chances of success, cybercriminals continually change their tools, tactics and procedures, the report says.

The rise in such crimes has led to the accumulation of digital assets by criminals and national governments after investigations, the top executive said.

In February, Sysdig discovered a large-scale hacking campaign, SCARLETEEL, targeting cloud services. In compromised cloud environments, criminals deployed cryptominers.
