Sui Developers Test Offline Cryptocurrency Transactions
Mysten Labs, a company associated with the Sui blockchain, is exploring the use of mobile networks and radio waves for offline cryptocurrency transactions, according to Cointelegraph.
The initiative aims to reach users without internet access.
“The more people who can access it, the stronger the network effects you create. If there is a way to use technology to bridge this gap and do it for free for those in need, then it is a great initiative overall,” explained Mysten Labs co-founder Adeniyi Abiodun.
During the research, developers managed to send a transaction using underwater waves, long-distance radio, and even compressed information for transmission as a small text message.
The essence lies in using mesh networks to transmit messages. This could involve satellites, relay mechanisms, or even radio.
“If I open a radio channel between two relays and encrypt a message that can be transmitted through it from one end to the other, it will go straight to your phone,” explained Abiodun.
According to the specialist, in addition to payments, coupons, rewards, or just data can also be sent.
“We can effectively transmit transactions over multiple communication channels without using the internet as a relay. This is important when there are emergency recovery issues, outages, or simply areas with low connectivity,” shared Abiodun.
The expert noted that this could become a “very powerful” development in the cryptocurrency space, especially regarding one-way payments.
Sui is collaborating with Canadian mobile service provider Chip Wireless and is considering expansion into target markets such as Africa.
Developers aim to go further and integrate the feature into IoT devices. This could benefit DePIN projects, which are also a focus for the organization. Abiodun described the underlying idea as “natural.” It involves the collective management of the public part of the infrastructure for the benefit of the general public and receiving rewards over time.
Back in September 3, Mysten Labs opened pre-orders for the SuiPlay0X1 console for Web3 games.
In May 2023, the company announced numerous partnerships with development companies to launch games on the Sui Network blockchain.
