Sui Network team launches testnet

The startup Mysten Labs, founded by former Meta engineers, announced the launch of the first-level blockchain test network Sui Network.

“This is a huge step toward decentralization as the first instance of the Sui Network, governed not only by Mysten Labs,” the team said.

The testnet, named Wave 1, focuses on operators — specifically validators and those who run full nodes.

Developers cited among the main tasks the development of decentralized coordination and incident response. They also plan to identify a core group of operators with experience deploying, monitoring, and debugging nodes.

The team acknowledged that they expect certain problems and “learning moments” in the operation of the first variant of the decentralized network. Wave 1 will be a temporary solution, and it will be turned off after achieving the objectives. On the road to launching the mainnet, Mysten Labs engineers anticipate using several more test iterations of the protocol.

“We thank the community for participating in testing the Sui infrastructure. We will maintain Wave 1 for roughly two to three weeks,” the startup said.

For app developers, the team recommended continuing to use the developer network (devnet) as the preferred and more stable environment.

In September Mysten Labs closed a Series B funding round of $300 million at a $2 billion valuation.

In early November the startup entered into a strategic partnership with one of the investors — the South Korean developer and publisher of online games NCsoft. The aim of the collaboration is to create entertainment applications on the Sui blockchain.
