Survey shows 13% of Britons have invested in cryptocurrencies
The share of UK investors who have traded cryptocurrencies over the past 18 months rose from 6% to 13.5%. The results come from a Gemini study of the Bitcoin exchange, which was obtained by DeCrypt.
The survey included 2,000 respondents.
“Bitcoin has never been so accessible. We expect further expansion of investor reach, particularly among the 9% in the survey who expressed a desire to do so in the near term,” commented Blair Holliday, head of Gemini UK.
The results overturn the notion of the “average crypto investor.” It turns out to be a man or a middle-aged woman who is married with children, rather than a young, childless bachelor. Gender differences are eroding — among crypto holders, 41.6% were female.
Crypto investors do not differ from the average Briton in income. 91.8% of them earned no more than £100,000 per year for the household, roughly the same as 95% of Britons.
In age terms, 60.6% of cryptocurrency investors were under 34. The lower entry threshold for this space was lower for those generally interested in technological progress and who had experience using, for example, devices with the prefix “smart.” For those who did not feel enthusiasm about this, they typically did not consider buying cryptocurrencies.

The study also found that 47.8% of crypto investors plan to increase the size of their holdings over the next year. Among investors more broadly, only about one in three gave such an answer.
In another survey conducted by the financial company Ziglu, 31% of Britons surveyed expressed willingness to invest in cryptocurrencies. Sixty-two percent cited a lack of understanding of the market, and 43% cited a lack of knowledge about safe methods.
In October, 55% of Grayscale Investments’ US investors were prepared to invest in the first cryptocurrency. The figure has risen by one and a half times over the year.
