Swedish Finance Minister Urged to Consider Bitcoin Reserve
Swedish MP Rickard Nordin published an open letter urging Finance Minister Elisabeth Svantesson to consider adopting Bitcoin as a national reserve asset.
“Sweden has a tradition of a conservative and well-managed currency reserve, consisting mainly of foreign currencies and gold. At the same time, there is rapid development in digital assets, and several international players view Bitcoin as a means of savings and a hedge against inflation,” Nordin noted.
In his view, the first cryptocurrency is “an important way for freedom fighters to conduct transactions under the oppression of authoritarian regimes.”
The MP also emphasized that Bitcoin’s monetary properties are comparable to gold, especially during times of increasing geopolitical and economic uncertainty.
As a method of accumulating digital assets, Nordin suggested the government refrain from selling coins confiscated by the police and customs:
“This is how the US accumulated a significant amount without allocating budget funds or purchasing the cryptocurrency itself.”
In March, US President Donald Trump signed an order establishing a strategic Bitcoin reserve.
However, Congress called to halt the initiative. Shortly before, a bill emerged that would protect Trump’s plan from cancellation.
