Swiss company launches cold-storage Bitcoin wallet in the form of a banknote

SMD Security Printing Sàrl released the first batch of Icynote paper cold wallets Icynote. The print run totaled 100,000 units.

During the pre-sale, the company received 200 orders for more than 1,000 banknotes. The first Russian distributor of Icynote was the hardware-wallet store Cryptonist.

\n\n

Icynote is a high-density polyethylene wallet. The Icynote banknotes withstand temperatures from -40 to 60 °C, and are water- and mechanically resistant.

\n\n

The wallet measures 158×70 mm. Icynote makers use special printing inks, and apply holographic images to the banknotes in accordance with Swiss standards.

\n\n

The addresses of the wallets are generated by a hardware random-number generator. Employees of SMD Security Printing Sàrl destroy the printers’ hard drives after printing.

\n\n

We are not creating a database of future Icynote owners; we give privacy,\” comments Martin Demier, CEO of SMD Security Printing Sàrl.

The banknotes can be used to store Bitcoin, as well as for payments in stores, hotels, and restaurants that support Icynote. In the future, developers will create banknotes for other digital currencies.

\n\n

To transfer Bitcoin from Icynote you must remove the protective holographic layer. Under it lies the private key to access the assets. The manufacturer advises against accepting banknotes with a damaged protective layer.

\n\n

The authenticity of the banknotes can be checked with the Icynote mobile app. It will appear in the App Store and Google Play in July 2021.
