Synchron Connects Brain Implant to Apple Vision Pro
Neurotechnology firm Synchron has linked a brain implant to the Apple Vision Pro mixed reality headset, as reported by CNBC.
This innovation allows patients with limited physical mobility and an integrated brain-computer interface (BCI) to control the gadget using thought alone.
Synchron is developing BCI technology for patients with paralysis, enabling them to operate devices like smartphones or computers through thought. The company was the first in the United States to implant a neural interface into a human brain.
Apple released the Vision Pro earlier this year. The gadget can be controlled via eye movements, voice commands, or hand gestures. Synchron is working to make the device accessible to patients unable to speak or move their upper limbs.
Synchron CEO Thomas Oxley noted that Apple’s ecosystem is best in class, which is why the firm focused on the Vision Pro. Future plans include connecting the BCI to other headsets.
The first to test the new solution was a 64-year-old patient named Mark, who began using the Vision Pro in April. He stated that controlling the headset is not much different from using an iPhone, iPad, or computer.
“For me, it’s just another way to gain some independence,” he said.
Mark cannot raise his hands or draw, so he uses the Apple gadget to create artworks. He also enjoys stargazing with a special application.
Previously, Synchron integrated OpenAI’s generative AI into its BCI platform. Mark was the first to test the technology for communication with his doctor.
Although Synchron is a pioneer in integrating neural interfaces into the brain, the concept gained widespread attention following the successes of Elon Musk’s Neuralink.
Back in January, the billionaire’s startup implanted its first brain chip in a human. Soon after, it enabled mind-controlled cursor movement.
