The head of Tanzania’s central bank, Florence Luoga, said at a financial conference that preparations for issuing a CBDC have begun, Bloomberg reports.
According to him, the regulator took this step so that the country would not remain on the sidelines of central bank digital currency adoption. For the same purpose, the central bank intends to expand the capabilities of the CBDC research working group.
In developing a national digital currency, Tanzania plans to follow Nigeria’s example. 25 October, President Muhammadu Buhari announced the launch of eNaira, which will supplement cash.
Earlier in September, Chile’s central bank president Mario Marcel outlined plans to form a team to study the possibilities of CBDC.
Regulators in Guatemala and Honduras have also begun considering the question of integrating national digital currencies.
In November, Peru’s central bank governor Julio Velarde spoke of CBDC development in cooperation with the central banks of India, Singapore and Hong Kong.
