In 2024, the Telegram messenger provided U.S. authorities with data on 2,253 users upon request, 404 Media reported, citing the Transparency Report bot.
According to the report, from 1 January to 30 September 2024 the platform granted 14 U.S. requests for IP addresses and/or phone numbers, affecting 108 users. In total for 2024, authorities sought disclosure relating to 2,253 users.
The data indicate a significant rise in processed requests between October and December.
Over the first nine months of 2024, the messenger did not grant any requests from Russia or Ukraine.
Earlier, Telegram founder Pavel Durov had cited statistics on legal requests from several countries to disclose user data.
In August 2024, French authorities brought a series of preliminary charges alleging the messenger had failed to tackle purported criminal activity on the platform.
The businessman was placed under judicial supervision with €5m bail and required to report to the police twice a week. He is barred from leaving France until March 2025.
In his first post after release, Durov announced enhanced moderation on Telegram.
In September, the messenger began to process more promptly and respond to legal requests from European authorities.
