Telegram malware scams targeting crypto investors surge 2,000% in two months

The number of recorded malware scam incidents targeting crypto investors on Telegram has surpassed traditional phishing attacks, Scam Sniffer analysts reported.

By their estimates, from November 2024 to January 2025 the frequency of such attacks increased by 2,000%. To lure victims, attackers use fake verification bots and invitations to “exclusive” trading or airdrop channels.

After a fake verification, malicious code is injected into the clipboard, downloading malware and giving hackers access to passwords, a crypto wallet and browser data.

Scam Sniffer says the tactic emerged as users became more wary of familiar crypto-fraud schemes.

According to Chainalysis statistics, in 2024 the amount of funds stolen in the crypto industry rose by about 21% to $2.2 billion. The largest share came from DeFi services.
