Telegram to pay around $625,000 in legal costs in Gram trademark case

The company Telegram Messenger Inc. will reimburse court costs of about $625,000 to the American startup Lantah LLC, with whom it litigated over the right to use the GRAM trademark and ticker.

The U.S. district court awarded Lantah $618,240 in attorney’s fees and $6,737 in costs.

Attorney’s fees were calculated at a market rate of $600 per hour.

Telegram sued Lantah in 2018 over plans to launch a digital currency called Gram as part of the Telegram Open Network (TON).

Representatives of the messenger argued that Lantah sought to profit from selling tokens under the same name.

Lantah stated that it publicly used the name Gram before Telegram learned of the plans.

In May 2020, Pavel Durov announced the termination of the TON project under pressure from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and a U.S. court ban on distributing Gram tokens.

In August, Telegram withdrew the suit against Lantah and agreed to cover court costs.
