Tether Revises Plans to Freeze USDT on Five ‘Legacy’ Blockchains

Tether Revises Plans to Freeze USDT on Five 'Legacy' Blockchains

The stablecoin issuer Tether has abandoned its plans to freeze USDT tokens circulating on the Omni Layer, Bitcoin Cash SLP, Kusama, EOS, and Algorand networks.

In 2024, the company announced it would wind down support for these five ‘legacy’ blockchains by ceasing the issuance of new coins. Users had until September 1, 2025, to redeem USDT. Any remaining tokens after the specified date were to be frozen.

Tether reconsidered this decision, citing feedback from blockchain communities, and decided against freezing the USDT smart contract in these networks.

Users can still operate with the assets, but there will be no new issuance of the stablecoin on these protocols. The company emphasized that this means there will be no official support for the tokens.

“This decision aligns with Tether’s broader strategy, which remains focused on expanding support for ecosystems with the most developer activity, scalability, and user demand,” the statement said.

According to the company’s data, 82.9 million USDT remain in circulation on Omni, and 4.2 million USDT on EOS. The figures for SLP and Algorand are approximately 1 million and 0.8 million coins, respectively. On Kusama, 0.2 million USDT are circulating.

The total market supply of the stablecoin exceeds 167.5 billion tokens. Of these, 83.3 billion USDT are circulating on Ethereum, and 79.6 billion on Tron.

In August, the issuer announced support for USDT on the protocol for issuing digital assets on the Bitcoin network, RGB.
