The Pentagon uses ChatGPT to draft a press release on the drone task force launch

The US Department of Defense used ChatGPT to write a story about the launch of a new operational group to counter drones.

The Visual Information Distribution Service (DVIDS), the department’s news and images repository, published the piece. It is an online repository of news and images created by the U.S. military.

The article concerns the launch of Task Force 39. According to ChatGPT, it is an “authorized joint force of soldiers focused on developing an innovative culture and establishing regional and sector partnerships to ensure future battlefield effectiveness.”

“The team is focused on countering the threat posed by small unmanned aerial vehicles and developing innovative solutions for other security challenges,” the article states.

The press release notes that the material was created with the help of artificial intelligence.

“The use of AI to create this story underscores the U.S. Army Central Command’s commitment to leveraging new technologies and innovations in a challenging and ever-changing operating environment,” the statement said.

Writing articles for DVIDS is one of several applications of artificial intelligence by the department. The repository also hosts articles and photographs of the Pentagon’s experiments with autonomous drone swarms.

The 2021 DVIDS published information about using AI to train personnel of the United States Air National Guard.

The Pentagon is not the first organization to run a blog with AI. BuzzFeed previously announced its intention to use generative models to create content.

Earlier this January, the information portal CNET was accused of writing articles with AI.

The portal leadership acknowledged inaccuracies in the articles and said they would be corrected. The publication nevertheless intends to continue using AI as an author.
