The layoffs will affect teams in Argentina, Uruguay, South Korea, Thailand, and Turkey. The company will also close its office in Lyon.
Co-founders Arthur Madrid and Sebastien Borget will step back from operational management. The new CEO of The Sandbox will be Robby Yung, head of the Web3 company Animoca Brands.
According to the publication, the project team plans to launch a memecoin launchpad on the Base blockchain.
The Sandbox is revising its strategy amid declining interest in metaverses following the boom of 2021-2022.
The native token SAND is trading at $0.28. The asset has fallen 96.6% from its peak of $8.4, reached in November 2021.
Back in June 2024, The Sandbox completed a $20 million funding round with support from Animoca Brands.
