Experts have identified more than 6,300 vulnerable surveillance cameras located at various facilities, gas stations and critical infrastructure sites.
According to Kommersant, citing Avast, attackers can access them through open IP addresses. In most of these cameras’ systems, access is possible without a username and password or by guessing a default password.
According to data from the Internet of Things search engine Shodan.io, Russia ranks fifth in the number of cameras with open IPs. Other countries in the top five are Vietnam, Taiwan, South Korea and the United States.
Russia occupies third place in the total number of surveillance cameras in the world. In total, Russia has 13.5 million cameras installed, researchers counted.
Earlier in the dark web, access to all cameras of Moscow’s city surveillance system was sold.
Most cameras are equipped with facial recognition technology. The public organisation «RосКомСвобода» called for a moratorium on the use of the technology until the necessary safeguards against abuse are implemented.
