Tim Draper warns about AI-powered crypto scammers
Investor and billionaire Tim Draper has issued a warning about cryptocurrency scammers who use artificial intelligence to imitate his voice.
Apparently AI is getting smarter, and people are using my voice to try to get you to send money (crypto). Please know that I will never ask the public X followers for money. If anyone asks, it is not me. They are thieves.

“Obviously, AI is getting smarter, and people are using my voice to get you to send money (crypto). Please know that I will never ask money from my followers on X. If anyone asks, it is not me. They are thieves,” Draper said.
Deepfakes — one of the main problems of AI technology. In recent years there has been much discussion about the threat posed by fake personalities that extend beyond the cryptocurrency and AI industries.
In early October, Hollywood star Tom Hanks posted a screenshot of a video of his deepfake promoting “some dental services.” The actor said he had nothing to do with it and urged caution.
Shortly after Hanks, American television host Gayle King posted a similar message. She said the scammers used another video of her talk-show advertisement to promote their product.
“… they manipulated my voice and image to give the impression that I was endorsing their product. I never heard of this product and did not use it! Please do not be fooled by these AI videos,” King wrote.
Subsequently, YouTube blogger James Donalson, known as MrBeast, posted on X warning about his own deepfake promoting a fraudulent iPhone 15 Pro giveaway.
Lots of people are getting this deepfake scam ad of me… are social media platforms ready to handle the rise of AI deepfakes? This is a serious problem pic.twitter.com/llkhxswQSw

“Are social media platforms ready to cope with the rise of AI-powered deepfakes? This is a serious problem,” the blogger asked.
In January, researchers at OpenAI warned of the rising threat of using language models to spread misinformation. American scientists, in turn, urged countering deepfakes created by “hostile states.”
In July, the UN stated that AI-generated fake videos threaten the integrity of information and fuel societal hatred.
As a reminder, in November 2022, after the collapse of FTX, a deepfake of the exchange founder Sam Bankman-Fried circulated on social media, offering to participate in a cryptocurrency giveaway as compensation spread.
