The lots are based on a series of provocative covers. The first, bearing the text ‘God is dead?’, was published on April 8, 1966. The publication noted that TIME at the time was the first to use a cover consisting only of text, with no image.
The second NFT, ‘Truth is dead?’, was published on April 3, 2017 — about two-and-a-half months after the inauguration of former U.S. President Donald Trump.
The third cover ‘Fiat is dead?’ was created specifically for the auction. Its authors contrasted cryptocurrencies with fiat money. As examples of digital assets, TIME cited Bitcoin and Dogecoin.

«I like the idea that the meaning of the word ‘fiat’ is unclear to the layperson, as is the crazy, lucrative world of NFTs,» said the author of the latest cover and TIME’s creative director D. U. Pine.
As of writing, the highest bids stood at:
- God is dead? — 10 ETH (about $16,730 at the time of writing);
- Truth is dead? — 11 ETH (~$18,403);
- Fiat is dead? — 22 ETH (~$36,806).
On the day the auction began, TIME also opened the vacancy for Chief Financial Officer (CFO). The future top executive should understand the cryptocurrency industry.
“The media industry is undergoing rapid evolution, and TIME is seeking a CFO who can lead this transformation,” the vacancy states.
Among other requirements, the candidate is expected to have more than seven years of leadership experience, an MBA, and a willingness to launch new products.
As reported, Twitter founder Jack Dorsey sold his first tweet as an NFT for $2.91 million. The buyer was Sina Estavi, founder of Bridge Oracle.
Earlier, Beeple called a bubble the situation in the NFT market after selling an NFT for record-breaking $69.3 million.
