Tornado Cash Developer Appeals Conviction

Alexey Pertsev, the developer behind the cryptocurrency mixer Tornado Cash, has appealed his guilty verdict, according to CoinDesk.

The appeal has been submitted to the Court of Appeal in ‘s-Hertogenbosch. The outcome remains uncertain and could take several months to be determined.

Previously, a Dutch court found Pertsev guilty of laundering $1.2 billion through the mixer between July 2019 and August 2022, sentencing him to 64 months in prison.

Immediately following the sentencing, the developer was taken to prison, although he could have requested to await the appeal at home, the publication notes.

In August 2022, the OFAC blacklisted Tornado Cash for its role in laundering over $7 billion in illicit funds. Pertsev was arrested in the same month.

Charges of money laundering and sanctions violations in the US have also been brought against Tornado Cash co-founders Roman Storm and Roman Semenov. The former was released on bail and refused to plead guilty. The latter remained free but fell under sanctions.
