Twitter’s algorithms will show only verified accounts in the ‘For You’ tab

From April 15, 2023, Twitter’s For You recommendations feed will be built from tweets published by verified users.

According to the social network’s owner, Elon Musk, the aim is to prevent the feed from being captured by an advanced swarm of AI bots. He added that Twitter “will hopelessly lose the battle” if the change is not introduced.

In a subsequent tweet, Musk explained that AI bots can pay for verification if they do not violate the platform’s rules and do not impersonate humans.

The Twitter ‘For You’ tab shows not only tweets from followed accounts but also content based on recommendations. The feature debuted in January 2023 on iOS. It was later rolled out to other platforms.

At first, the social network defaulted to showing the new tab to all users, but after a wave of criticism it restored the chronological feed as the starting screen.

Earlier, Twitter announced that starting April 1 it would begin winding down legacy verification checkmarks issued before the Blue subscription launch. Public figures, companies, government and non-governmental organizations must now pay for verification.

As reported, on March 31, Twitter will open the source code of the recommendation algorithm.
