U.S. Congress to discuss cryptocurrencies with industry executives

On December 8 at a hearing in the U.S. House of Representatives on the topic ‘Digital assets and the future of finance: understanding the challenges and benefits of financial innovation’, industry executives will testify. The roster was disclosed by the chair of the Financial Services Committee, Maxine Waters.

Among the participants are Circle CEO Jeremy Allaire, FTX CEO Sam Bankman-Fried, Bitfury CEO Brian Brooks, Paxos CEO Charles Cascarilla, Stellar Development Foundation CEO Denelle Dixon, and Coinbase Global CFO Alesia Haas.

No additional information was disclosed.

Waters aims to protect investors and consumers by holding tech giants to account. In June, under her leadership, they created cryptocurrencies working group, previously with a focus on CBDC.

Waters has previously expressed concerns about the Diem Association (Libra Association) project. In June 2019, the congresswoman urged Facebook to halt the development of the digital currency, and two months later introduced a plan of work for its further study.

Earlier, Waters urged the Biden administration to withdraw OCC’s decisions within the U.S. Treasury regarding cryptocurrencies and stablecoins.
