According to the U.S. Department of Justice, 27-year-old John Hu and his co-conspirators distributed counterfeit prescription drugs and other controlled substances on the dark web, receiving payment in Bitcoin and other digital currencies. Collectively, the defendant conducted hundreds of transactions totaling $5.3 million.
The California man was arrested in August. He is now charged with conspiracy to launder money and the illegal importation of controlled substances. He faces up to 20 years in prison on each count.
Back in September, the organizer of fraud scheme IGOBIT was sentenced to 42 months in prison. More than 60 people were victims, and losses exceeded $600,000.
