U.S. State Department offers $10 million for information on DarkSide hackers

The U.S. State Department offered a reward for information leading to the identification of members of the DarkSide hacking group.

For information on the organizers and leaders of DarkSide, American authorities are prepared to pay up to $10 million.

In addition, the State Department has offered up to $5 million for information leading to the arrest of individuals involved in the DarkSide ransomware attack on Colonial Pipeline.

In May 2021, hackers attacked Colonial Pipeline, which supplies fuel to about 45% of the population on the U.S. East Coast. The breach disrupted the pipeline’s operations.

According to reports, the company paid the attackers 75 BTC. Shortly thereafter, the group announced the suspension of its activities.

In June, the FBI returned a large portion of the ransom paid. How exactly the agency gained access to the extortionists’ bitcoin wallet is not disclosed.

In October, experts found that from the hackers’ wallets, into which funds had been received after the Colonial Pipeline attack, began to withdraw bitcoins.
