Uber chief signals possible future cryptocurrency payments

Uber ‘definitely’ will accept payments in cryptocurrencies in the future. This was stated by the company’s CEO Dara Khosrowshahi in an interview with Bloomberg.

According to him, in Uber there are ongoing discussions on this topic. However, the head of the firm also mentioned high costs and environmental impact.

As cryptocurrencies become cheaper and greener, I think we’ll lean toward them a bit more. Will Uber accept cryptocurrencies in the future? Of course. At some point. That moment hasn’t come yet, but it will,” said Dara Khosrowshahi.

On 11 February 2021, the Uber CEO stated that the company will consider Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies as a payment method if it sees a benefit.

In the same month, Tesla invested $1.5 billion in Bitcoin. Elon Musk called this decision ‘quite risky’.

In March 2021, the billionaire announced the start of sales of electric cars for Bitcoin in the United States. In May, the company paused accepting BTC due to concerns about the environmental sustainability of its mining.

In the summer, Musk stated that Tesla will resume selling electric cars for Bitcoin when it confirms that at least half of the miners have switched to renewable energy. Around the same time, the founder and head of the BTC.TOP mining pool Jiang Zhuoer drew the entrepreneur’s attention to the fact that the condition has been met as a result of China’s crackdown on mining.

In October, Tesla hinted at the possibility of resuming cryptocurrency payments.
