UK and France Allocate £800,000 for AI Research

The UK and France have announced new funding and partnership initiatives aimed at enhancing global AI safety.

Under the agreements, the parties have committed £800,000 for joint research. A partnership between the UK’s Institute for AI Safety and the French company Inria has also been announced.

“It is right that we support our scientists and unlock the power of their ideas to create jobs and grow businesses with our closest continental neighbour,” stated UK Secretary of State Michelle Donelan.

The establishment of a Franco-British committee on science, technology, and innovation provides an opportunity to develop cooperation across a range of areas, including space observation.

“Working together with such a reliable partner as the UK is a great opportunity to strengthen France’s scientific potential abroad and participate in the opening of Europe’s strategic autonomy,” said France’s Minister of Higher Education and Research Sylvie Retailleau.

Collaboration between the countries will accelerate the development of scientific research and innovation, focusing on AI and quantum technologies.

Earlier, Meta announced a team to combat AI misinformation in the European Parliament elections, scheduled for June 6-9.

Back in February, Microsoft announced a $2.1 billion investment in the French AI startup Mistral AI.
