Ukraine to track timber shipments via blockchain

Ukraine has joined a pilot project run by the Forest Stewardship Council to track timber movement on international markets using blockchain technology. This was announced by сообщил Viktor Smal, deputy head of the State Forestry Resources Agency for digitalisation.

According to him, demand for deploying the system is constant from global producers seeking to source raw materials only from verified origins.

“Data on timber, its origin and movement will accumulate in decentralized international databases. Blockchain technology will ensure the integrity of the information and prevent misuse of data already entered,” the official said.

The first users of the system will be state-owned enterprises subordinate to the Forestry Resources Agency in the Zakarpattia region.

The entered data will help track timber from country of origin to further movements on international markets. Ukrainian timber will meet all international requirements for transparency and traceability of raw materials.

“The forestry sector of our country has traditionally been considered very closed. We are changing that through digitalisation. The implementation of such projects demonstrates our readiness for openness and transparency,” Viktor Smal said in a ForkLog commentary.

Worldwide, besides Ukraine, China is already using the new system. The results of the pilot will determine its wider deployment in other countries.

In June, Ukrainian MPs urged EU leaders to create a unified infrastructure for blockchain services.

In March, the public association \”Virtual Assets of Ukraine\” sent the Prime Minister a roadmap for implementing DLT technology in public administration.
