Vyacheslav Mishalov, a deputy of the Dnipro City Council, who declared 18,000 BTC (more than $1 billion) for 2020, said the data were erroneous. The information was reported by the TV channel UA: First TV channel UA: First.
The official said that he had made changes to his electronic declaration but did not notice the cryptocurrency line.
“I have some amount of bitcoins, it’s a large sum too, but of course not that much,” explained Mishalov.
The deputy added that he has already obtained the statement and will soon submit updated data to the National Agency on Prevention of Corruption (NACP).
The deputy did not disclose the amount of his bitcoins.
Alexander Urbansky, deputy head of the Odessa Oblast Council, who declared 5,328 BTC (more than $307 million at the time of writing), said that he allegedly acquired the cryptocurrency as early as 2009, when the price of a single coin was $1.
“When they are legalized in Ukraine, then we will do something with them. For now they will stay where they are,” commented Urbansky.
Earlier, ForkLog reported that in the 2020 declarations Ukrainian officials stated a total of 46,351 BTC.
Representatives of the NACP intend to verify the officials who hold cryptocurrency, including the provenance of funds used to purchase digital currencies.
