Ukrainian MP Suspected of Misappropriating Cryptocurrency Worth 24 Million UAH
NABU and the SAP have announced a suspicion against a Ukrainian Member of Parliament, who allegedly provided false information regarding cryptocurrency ownership in his 2020 declaration.
According to local media, the individual in question is Oleksandr Marikovskyi, a member of the Servant of the People faction.
The case materials indicate that in 2020, the MP declared cryptocurrency with a market value exceeding 24.6 million UAH, which he claimed to have owned since 2019.
However, law enforcement discovered that the declarant is not the owner of the specified crypto wallet, and the transactions for acquiring digital assets were conducted by foreign nationals unconnected to the MP.
The investigation is ongoing.
In 2021, representatives of the NACP announced plans to scrutinize officials owning cryptocurrency, including the origins of funds used for purchasing digital currencies.
Civic groups suggested that the agency include cryptocurrency wallet addresses and verification data of their owners in declarations to minimize money laundering risks.
That same year, the Verkhovna Rada passed a law reinstating criminal liability for false declarations by officials.
