UN says North Korea funds nuclear programmes through attacks on Bitcoin exchanges.

North Korea continues to develop its nuclear programmes, with the proceeds from attacks on cryptocurrency exchanges a major source of funding. Reuters reports, citing a UN report.

Between 2020 and mid-2021, North Korean hackers stole more than $50 million from at least three cryptocurrency exchanges across North America, Europe and Asia.

The report also cites data from Chainalysis, according to which North Korean cybercriminals last year conducted at least seven attacks on cryptocurrency platforms, stealing assets worth around $400 million.

In 2020, the U.S. military asserted that more than 6000 hackers were at work for North Korea worldwide.
