The new institution will focus on five areas:
- expanding access to financial products;
- transparent governance to combat corruption;
- supply chain integrity — accountability in public procurement and logistics;
- using smart contracts and tokens to ensure transparency in climate change financing;
- enhancing digital identification.
The training will include in-person workshops, online courses, and forums, specifically tailored to the needs of the public sector and local conditions. Each government team will receive structured support throughout the program.
The exact timeline for the blockchain academy’s launch remains unknown. It is reported that the first educational programs will commence in some countries by 2026.
The official announcement of the initiative will take place at the TOKEN2049 conference in Singapore, scheduled for October 1-2.
“The Government Blockchain Academy will provide countries with the opportunity to address complex development challenges in new ways, moving from experimentation to implementation with a focus on transparency, inclusivity, and sustainability,” said Irena Cherovich, Head of Innovation at UNDP in Europe and Central Asia.
Professor Paolo Tasca, Executive Chairman of Exponential Science, described the institution as a “collective blueprint for public innovation.”
Initial initiatives to create the blockchain academy emerged in 2023, when the agency announced a partnership with the Algorand Foundation. As part of the collaboration, UNDP aimed to train 22,000 staff from 170 countries in distributed ledger technology.
