University of Tokyo to launch courses in the metaverse

The engineering faculty of the University of Tokyo will offer a range of academic programs in virtual worlds by the end of 2022, according to Asahi.

\n\n

The initiative will allow study of information technology, artificial intelligence and programming regardless of gender, age, socioeconomic background, and place of residence.

\n\n

Schoolchildren will be introduced to metaverses and will be told about career prospects in the industry. University students and already employed participants in the program will be offered retraining opportunities.

\n\n

Successful completion of the courses will earn a certificate. At this stage, the program is not planned to be established as a standalone faculty awarding degrees.

\n\n

The main aim of the project is to address the shortage of workers in the digital transformation sector. The authors of the initiative intend to attract more women to the program.

\n\n

In June, the government of the autonomous region of Catalonia announced plans to launch their own metaverse.

\n\n

Earlier Samsung Electronics unveiled the Space Tycoon game in the Roblox virtual world.
