Unknown bidder buys NFT of Wikipedia’s first version for $750,000

On December 15, Christie’s auction house завершил торги NFT collection ‘Birth of Wikipedia’, during which it sold the first page of the largest online encyclopedia.

\n\n\n\n

The founder of Wikipedia, Jimmy Wales, created it on January 15, 2001. The entry consists of a single phrase ‘Hello, World!’ (‘Hello, World!’). The token sold for $750,000.

\n\n\n\n

Also at the hammer went Wales’s personal iMac, on which he made that very recording. The computer sold for $187,500.

\n\n\n\n

The buyers of both lots were not disclosed.

\n\n\n\n

Earlier in December, Wales выставил the first version of the Internet encyclopedia for sale at Christie’s as an NFT.

\n\n\n\n

After the sale, the Wikipedia homepage will be posted online. Five minutes after editing, it will revert to its original state. The new owner will be able to block access to the page or prohibit editing.
