US Calls for Global Consensus on AI at UN

The United States has introduced a resolution on the use of AI to the UN General Assembly, announced the country’s ambassador to the organization, Linda Thomas-Greenfield.

“Its adoption would mark the first-ever UN initiative to achieve global consensus on AI,” stated Thomas-Greenfield on her X page.

According to her, the technology has “enormous potential to transform the economy, society, and the world for the better.”

“The resolution calls for the development of safe, reliable, and trustworthy AI systems to address the world’s greatest challenges, including poverty, global health, food security, climate energy, and education,” said Thomas-Greenfield.

She made a joint statement on behalf of 40 countries, including the United Kingdom, Germany, Israel, India, and Japan. The participants expressed hope for support from the remaining 139 states.

“Consensus on this important issue could help spread the benefits of AI to member states across all regions and levels of development by 2030,” added Thomas-Greenfield.

Morocco’s ambassador to the UN, Omar Hilale, described the resolution as a great opportunity to unite countries.

“The potential of AI to accelerate human development is immense. At the same time, it is important to remember the malicious use of this technology, which could have very serious consequences for global peace and security,” he stated.

The resolution will be put to a vote on March 21.

Earlier, on March 13, the European Union’s parliament approved the world’s first set of basic rules governing AI activities.
