US Citizens Begin Receiving Passports for Bitcoin

Peninsula Visa, which specialises in passport services for US residents, opened accepting bitcoin payments.

Crypto payment processing is handled through the Coinbase Commerce system.

Bitcoin can already be used to pay for passport renewals, name changes and obtaining a second passport. Other services related to issuing new passports and visas are planned to be activated during 2021.

\n

“Never before has it been possible to pay for an American passport with digital currency,” said Peninsula Visa’s Chief Operating Officer Evan James.

\n

He added that the decision to shift payments to digital form was driven by the coronavirus pandemic.

\n

Earlier in June, Venezuelan authorities attempted to use Bitcoin as a payment method for passport processing. However, just a few hours after the feature was introduced, the option to pay in BTC disappeared from the site.
