US school employee sought in connection with illegal cryptocurrency mining operation

An employee of one of Cohasset’s schools in Massachusetts, suspected of organizing an illegal mining operation and electricity theft, has been sought by authorities after failing to appear at his next court hearing. Local media report.

In December 2021, the school’s principal discovered 11 ASIC miners in a basement area near the boiler room, illegally connected to the electrical grid. Ventilation ducts were additionally run to the mining setup.

A 39-year-old facilities custodian Nadim Nahas was suspected of organizing the mining operation. During the investigation, authorities found that the miners operated from April to December. Over that period the farm consumed electricity worth almost $18,000.

Previously, the suspect worked in the Cohasset Department of Facilities Management, but resigned. Nahas was due to appear in court on February 23 on charges of vandalism and fraudulent use of electricity, but he missed it. The court issued a warrant for his arrest.

Earlier, in June 2022, the Security Service of Ukraine discovered an illegally connected mining farm, monthly consuming electricity worth hundreds of thousands of hryvnias, at a rented warehouse near Kharkiv.
