US Seizes Cryptocurrency Intended for Hamas Worth ~$200,000

The US Department of Justice has disrupted a financing scheme for the terrorist group Hamas, seizing approximately $201,400 in cryptocurrencies.

According to law enforcement, the tracked address was used to launder more than $1.5 million in digital assets since October 2024.

Prosecutors noted that the group employed a constantly changing set of at least 17 wallets to receive donations from followers. In this instance, approximately $89,900 was intercepted in one account and about $111,500 in three others. The accounts were registered to Palestinians residing in Turkey.

“Hamas is responsible for the deaths of many US and Israeli citizens, and we will use all legal tools at our disposal to stop their campaign of terror and murder,” stated Prosecutor Edward Martin.

He assured the department’s determination to cut off the group’s funding and “find every cent” intended to support Hamas’s activities.

In 2024, media reported that the FinCEN was investigating cryptocurrency transactions totaling $165 million, allegedly linked to the group. However, experts deemed this figure inflated. Chainalysis analysts indicated that the amount erroneously included third-party funds that passed through various payment services interacting with criminals. Elliptic also noted the authorities’ distortion of the real situation regarding terrorists’ use of digital assets.

Earlier, the US Treasury requested additional powers in the cryptocurrency sector to monitor illegal flows.
