US War Department Deploys Google’s AI
US War Department launches GenAI.mil platform with Google's AI for national security.
The US War Department (DoW) has launched the GenAI.mil platform to implement Google’s Gemini for Government in national security.
This enterprise-level solution combines Google’s cloud services with AI optimization. The platform is certified under FedRAMP High security standards and DoW Impact Level 5 (IL5).
The initiative is part of a plan introduced in July by Donald Trump’s administration. The document mandates federal agencies to accelerate the adoption of advanced AI systems.
“Gemini for Government embodies American superiority in artificial intelligence, providing unparalleled analytical and creative capabilities directly to the most dominant fighting force in the world,” stated the DoW announcement.
Department representatives reported that AI-based tools are already deployed on Pentagon computers and military facilities worldwide.
“The future of American warfare has arrived, and it is called AI. As technology evolves, so do our adversaries. But here at the War Department, we are not standing idly by,” said DoW head Pete Hegseth.
The DoW has opened free access for employees to train on the GenAI.mil platform. The initiative aims to enhance personnel skills for effective AI utilization.
The US Department of Defense has intensified AI integration into the armed forces, heightening technological competition with China.
“In the global race for AI dominance, second place brings no rewards. Artificial intelligence is the new Manifest Destiny, and we intend to secure a dominant position in this field,” stated DoW Deputy Head for Research and Engineering Emil Michael.
China is considering AI as a key factor in future conflicts and aims to transition to the concept of “intelligentized” warfare. The state is supported in this direction by DeepSeek and other national tech companies.
Features of GenAI.mil
Google emphasized that their solution meets DoW requirements:
- secure IL5 authorization and data sovereignty — information is processed confidentially in a protected environment and is not used to train the corporation’s public AI models;
- optimization of routine tasks — the tool is designed for non-classified work, including automating administrative processes and speeding up contract preparation;
- scalability and compatibility — the solution ensures resilience and a commercial-level user experience.
“Google has been collaborating with US government agencies at all levels for decades to provide cutting-edge technology,” commented Google CEO Sundar Pichai.
He added that with the implementation of Gemini for Government, over 3 million civilian and military employees will gain access to “advanced technology.”
Back in July 2024, 200 employees of Google’s AI division — DeepMind — expressed dissatisfaction with the tech giant’s involvement in military initiatives.
