Uzbekistan restricts operation of several social networks
The State Inspectorate for Control in the Sphere of Informatization and Telecommunications of Uzbekistan restricted the operation of a number of social networks due to violations of the personal data law.
Media say that disruptions began affecting Twitter, TikTok, VKontakte, and also Skype.
In the regulator’s notice, the blocked social networks were added to the ‘register of violators of data-subject rights’, though their names were not disclosed.
Use of the services placed in the registry will be restricted until the identified deficiencies are addressed.
In January, Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev signed an amendment to the law “On Personal Data.” It obliges services to store residents’ personal data on technical means physically located in the country.
Earlier, Roskomnadzor demanded a response from Google, Twitter, Facebook and WhatsApp to the previously sent request about localising Russian users’ data on the territory of the Russian Federation.
