Vaccination overtook ‘cryptocurrency’ in the list of the most popular words of 2021

«Cryptocurrency» and «Bitcoin» failed to enter the top three in the ranking of the most popular words of 2021 among social-media users. According to сообщили specialists at Brand Analytics.

Analysts analyzed 874 billion words in 52.2 billion Russian-language posts published across various social media from January 2020 to November 2021. The calculation considered only terms whose mentions grew by at least twice compared with the previous year.

The top four spots in the ranking were taken by terms related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The word of the year 2021 in Russian-language social networks was «вакцинация» – it was mentioned in 33.5 million posts. This is almost six times more often than in 2020.

Following are «вакцина» – 27.1 million posts, «прививка» – 25.2 million mentions and «ковид» – 18.7 million publications. Mentions of each term grew about 2.5 times compared with the previous year.

In fifth place was «криптовалюта» with 14.6 million posts, overtaking «спутник» with 13.4 million. The number of posts on this topic grew 3.7 times.

In seventh place was «биткоин» with a fourfold rise and 10 million mentions.

Also in the Top 10 were «мигрант», «госуслуги» and «талибы» (the movement is recognised as a banned terrorist organization in the Russian Federation).

In November, Brand Analytics named the most popular cryptocurrencies among Russian social-media users.
