Venture investment in the industry in the first half tops $30 billion

The funding volume for blockchain startups in January–June 2022 amounted to $30.3 billion, surpassing the figure for 2021 ($30.2 billion). The data come from the Messari and Dove Metrics report.

Observers say that more than a third of all funds in 1,199 rounds went to the centralized finance sector (CeFi) — $10.2 billion.

In the CeFi segment, exchanges received $3.2 billion, payment services $1.5 billion, and $1.2 billion for market makers and for savings/banking accounts.

In the NFT segment, in the second quarter, projects not connected to the Ethereum blockchain attracted $3.5 billion. $2.8 billion — built on the second-largest cryptocurrency by market cap. Blockchain games lead by a wide margin with $4.2 billion. Marketplaces, in second place, invested $937 million.

Despite market turbulence, DeFi protocols raised $624 million in June — double the amount in any month since the start of the year. The largest share went to DEXs ($450 million) and asset-management services ($294 million). Ethereum-based startups accumulated $1.28 billion, projects on other blockchains — $502 million.

In the infrastructure startup segment, investor activity was concentrated in rounds for smart-contract platforms ($3.6 billion), mining companies ($1.3 billion) and data services ($1.2 billion).

Crypto funds in the first six months of 2022 attracted $35.9 billion (+848% versus January–March 2021).

PitchBook estimates that venture investments in crypto startups fell by 31% from April to June.

Earlier, Andreessen Horowitz launched a $600 million fund for investments in games and the metaverse.

Prior to that, Haun Ventures, led by former general partner of a16z Katie Haun, raised $1.5 billion in two crypto funds with a similar focus.
