The team is developing Kakarot zkEVM — an Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), implemented in StarkWare’s Cairo programming language.

The solution uses ZK-STARK technology to prove transactions and blocks. According to the developers, this allows inheriting the security of the underlying blockchain at lower costs.

In the first phase, the team will launch Kakarot zkEVM in L2 network StarkNet, which is backed by StarkWare.

Developers of EVM-compatible applications will be able to create and deploy them using languages common in the Ethereum ecosystem, such as Solidity, and the familiar toolchain.

In the second phase, Kakarot Labs, in collaboration with the Madara team, will implement zkEVM for third-tier and higher networks. It is expected to exponentially reduce gas costs and boost throughput in TPS.

For the third phase, the partners have set the task of developing a zkEVM client capable of validating blocks of the Layer-1 blockchain. Kakarot Labs noted that implementing this idea is linked to advancing the Ethereum roadmap.

Earlier in March, Vitalik Buterin described the integration of zkEVM into the L1 blockchain as necessary and inevitable.
